Fostex Brings Stereo Recording to Your iPhone(5)

Earlier this week, we wrote about the Olloclip that transformed your regular iPhone camera into a wide angle, fish eye, or macro lens. Now Fostex, a Japanese manufacturer and one of the largest transducer and OEM speaker makers in the world, brings you the AR-4i.

Fostex’s AR-4i is an audio interface that integrates with the iPhone 4 in order to give you stereo recorded sound. With the iPhone’s HD capabilities and a lens attachment like the Olloclip, you can now produce professional-grade recordings as easily as swiping your finger across a Retina display.

Fostex’s AR-4i — The Lowdown

The iPhone’s visual recording specs are one of its main selling points. They include video stabilization and high definition (1080p) with up to 30 frames per second. What the Apple specs page does not tell you is that the audio is mono and offers no control. The reason is simple: no one has advertised or promoted mono sound since the ’Beave’ got his first stereo in the 50s.

Cue the AR-4i from Fostex.

In June of last year, Olloclip founders Patrick O’Neil and Chong Pak made a video pledge on Kickstarter.com for their iPhone 4 and 4s lens adapter, the Olloclip. In the video, there is a demonstration of what the little lens converter from Huntington Beach can do.

The Olloclip is a triple lens system, with one ‘clip’ being double-sided (180-degree fisheye on one side and wide angle on the other) and the second clip being a macro. They are precision all-glass, multi-element optics. It works with all your favourite apps, like Instagram and Hipstamatic, and even the videoconferencing app, Facetime.

The video pledge goes on to show you some pretty nifty shots using the various Olloclip lenses and the iPhone 4. It can also be used with the HD video camera. The lens is compatible with the iPhone 4s, whose 8-megapixel camera begins to give it the kind of versatility you would expect from a regular point-and-shoot digital camera. But with the attachable lenses that Olloclip offers, the possibilities have now been expanded.
